🧠 The "galaxy brain" breakthrough
A simple shift to transform your search strategy
Job titles can be strangely terrible indicators of what a job actually involves. Which makes searching for jobs by title alone a tough way to find the right opportunities.
In my new From Fear to Focus Job Hunt Pathfinder, this is one of the insights that’s proven to be most helpful for users. This is exactly the strategy that allowed a Career River job seeker to land an offer in just 30 days after 427 days of unemployment. Here’s a sneak peek of what you’ll find inside the toolkit:
To help you find hidden opportunities, we are going to use a tactic called the Solution Search. This can apply to every stage of the interview process:
- Instead of typing dry, inaccurate job titles into a search engine, search for the actual problems you know how to solve (using the keywords from Exercise 1).
- When applying, make sure you highlight the specific problems you are uniquely qualified to handle.
- When interviewing, ask yourself: Did I showcase the problems I can solve for them?
As one Pathfinder alum put it:
As someone who’s been looking at a LOT of job ads in the past year or so and thought I knew what I was doing, the idea to search what was INSIDE the description instead of by title never occurred to me. Galaxy brain moment.
This mindset shift means your job search is no longer a test of your personal worth. It is a data-gathering exercise. If you submit an application and get ghosted, silence is data. It isn't a rejection of you; it’s a validated result telling you that a specific variable (like a keyword or a strategy) needs to be adjusted (or that you’re not the right fit, or the employer is bad at following up). By staying curious and clinical, you take the emotional sting out of the process.
